Partially blind Aussie is suing over contact lens solution

19/05/2008 - The case of a partially blind Brisbane man suing an American manufacturer over a contact lens solution is likely to prompt similar action in Australia, a lawyer says.

Information technology worker Tristan Mirapuri, 33, is suing Advanced Medical Optics - manufacturer of contact lens sterilising solution Complete Moisture Plus - in a lawsuit filed in Orange County, California.

Mirapuri, of Coorparoo in Brisbane, lost vision in his right eye a few months after using the contact lens solution, his lawyer Damian Scattini said.

In May 2007, Advanced Medical Optics withdrew Complete Moisture Plus from sale in the US, while Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration took action soon after.

The recall followed a warning from the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention that the risk of developing the rare eye infection, acanthamoeba keratitis, was at least seven times greater for those using the product.

Scattini said similar cases in Australia were likely to follow.

"(Law firm) Slater and Gordon is also investigating a possible consumer class action for other users of the contact lens sterilising solution who each paid hundreds of dollars over the four-year period that the effectively useless product was on sale," he said.
