Dumping more than three meters of rain, the typhoon took the lives of hundreds and stranded thousands more.
War veteran Chen Jing-yin used his Tunstall personal alarm to save his life and the lives of the local villagers in Taitung County.
At 7am on 8 August Mr Chen witnessed the mass of water from Taimali River washing away the river embankment and saw the flood situation that was approaching.
Using his personal alarm Mr Chen was able to alert Tunstall's response centre to the crisis so the village could be notified and the Taitung County neighbourhood could be evacuated.
Mr Chen is one of the 542 older veterans living alone who has been supplied with a Tunstall personal alarm by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
The personal alarm allows Mr Chen to make quick and easy contact with Tunstall's 24 hour response centre in emergency situations.
Mr Chen's actions and the fast response by Tunstall's response centre were able to save the lives of villagers and older veterans living alone who may not have made it otherwise.
Mr Chen is being praised for his performance by Taitung County locals.
