Three new health initiatives for children and teenagers

2/07/2008 - Dragging adolescents to the dentist just got easier for Australian families under one of three new health initiatives announced by federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon.

The programs include tackling teenage dental health, free health checks for children starting primary school and a guide to childhood health published for parents.

Roxon said although it was unclear how much the programs would save they represented an investment in the future health of the nation.

"We are determined as a government to be prepared to make these decisions which cost us now and will deliver long-term into the future," Roxon said.

From Tuesday parents who receive Family Tax Benefit Part A will receive an annual $150 dental voucher for each child aged 12 to 17 years.

Teenagers entitled to Youth Allowance or Abstudy will also be eligible for the voucher.

About 1.1 million teenagers will be eligible for the check-up, which provides an oral examination and X-rays, scale and cleaning where needed.

Roxon said the dental program together with the Commonwealth Dental Program would cost the government $780 million over five years.

She said teenagers were targeted because they commonly "drop off" attending dental appointments.

"Some people who are in a situation now where they have to weigh up whether they can afford to send their teenager to the dentist or whether they have to spend that extra money on groceries or petrol ... this will make it an easier decision for them," she said.

The basic health checks will be available to four-year-old children through GPs and practice nurses at the request of parents or carers.

They will focus on height, eyesight and hearing.

Roxon said the health checks would cost the government $25 million.

A colourful "Get Set 4 Life" guide produced in conjunction with the CSIRO will be available for parents at the time of the children's health checks and more widely in child care facilities.
