Value of professional practice development
Provided by UNE PARTNERSHIPS 1/09/2008 - A commitment to ongoing professional development has provided the Adelaide Animal Hospital with significant improvements to their veterinary practice. The Adelaide Animal Hospital in Trinity Gardens is one of the city’s largest veterinary hospitals employing over 30 staff. They are one of only 30 hospitals across Australia to be awarded with a “Hospital of Excellence” by the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association and in 2007 they received Pfizer’s “Practices of Excellence in Customer Service” award. The owner of the Adelaide Animal Hospital understand the value of encouraging their staff to pursue training and professional development. Last year, practice manager Lara Casanova completed her Diploma of Practice Management (customised for veterinary practices) with UNE Partnerships. Lara combined her study with attendance at workshops and found the experience invaluable in learning new skills. This study mode also provided the opportunity to network with other practice managers from around Australia. According to Lara, “networking has provided me with different perspectives and has given me many ideas that I have implemented in my practice. I have broadened my knowledge in all skills from improving my procedural manual, training staff, marketing ideas and financial matters and reporting.” Lara has maintained contact with the group and still refers to them regularly as a knowledge source. Throughout her study, Lara reinforced her knowledge through the practical assessment items. She continues to look at improvements within her practice and has used her new skills to self assess the practice and identify potential skills gaps within her team. News Articles
