The Pressure Relief Overlay Mattres (PROM) is good for helping to prevent decubitus ulcers, but is also used by many able bodied people with bad backs, aches and pains, etc.
This overlay mattress is placed on top of the existing mattress with the convolutions facing upwards. This is the part the patient will lie on. If the patients prefers, the PROM can be used upside down, but this will not trap air pockets under the body.
If necessary, use a waterproof sheet on top and then a normal sheet over it. An electric blanket can be used under the PROM foam mattress.
This product is to help with the prevention of pressure sores. Sometimes, due to the patient deteriorating, the product may become unsuitable. Continuous monitoring is necessary and alternative products may be recommended.
If soiled, the mattress can be washed by hand, squeezed and allowed to air dry.

It has also been observed that some patients may think the edge of the PROM is the edge of the mattress and they will not move off the PROM and go to close to the side of the bed.
