Zip-A-Bed

Zip-A-Bed

Zip-A-Bed

Pelican Manufacturing - This item is sometimes referred to as a coccoon, as it has a zip down each side help prevent people from falling out of bed.

* An alternative to Bed Side Rails.
* Soft for Patients, preventing bruising.
* Legs, arms & heads cannot be trapped.
* Incorporates an Evacuation Sheet.
* Adjustable for large or small patients.
* Easy to clean.
* Makes the bed look ‘normal’.

The Zip-A-Bed consists of a top sheet that looks like a bedspread, and a bottom sheet that is also an Emergency Evacuation Sheet.

In use, the top sheet/bedspread does not look like a piece of hospital equipment as it replaces bed side rails and provides a more ‘normal’ look to the bed. It is available in a variety of patterns that look ‘homely’. Due to the different depths of mattresses and different sizes of patients, we have provided adjustable straps on both sides of the Top Sheet/Bedspread. If the Top Sheet/Bedspread is too loose across the patient’s chest, simply pull one or both of the straps for a better fit.

If necessary, the Zip-A-Bed can be used for fire evacuation. In an evacuation, the two straps that hold the ‘Bottom Sheet’ to the bed frame are undone and repositioned again over the top of the patient. The patient, cocooned inside the mattress, is then lowered off the bed and towed to safety.

WARNING: It is possible for patients to extradite or move themselves off the edge of the mattress and be trapped beside the mattress but they should be prevented from falling by the Zip-A-Bed. If this is a problem, sometimes the nursing staff may want to use bed side rails as well as the Zip-A-Bed. Be warned that using bed side rails provides something that the patient can hold on to, to pull themselves up and possibly climb over. Also, they may hurt their arms and legs against the rails, unless Bed Rail Protectors are covering the side rails. Be careful not to damage the zip when raising or lowering the side rails.

Another method to prevent the patient moving off the mattress is to use the Pelican Bed Side Wedges under the Zip-A-Bed. The advantage of the Bed Side Wedges is that there are no hard rails for the patient to hurt themselves or hold onto to climb over. Another alternative si the Pelican Bed Fall Mat.

WARNING - Only use a Safety Belt or Restraint if all other alternatives have been tried. Ensure Restraint Authorisation has been obtained. Restrained patients should be kept under observation, as their behaviour may alter and another restraint may be more appropriate. Restraints are a prescribed item. The wrong restraint or the correct restraint incorrectly fitted can cause injury or death.

Zip-A-Bed Washing Instructions: Hand or machine wash only, up to 80°C. Do not tumble dry or wring - air dry only.
