Below are some tips on how to use the Hill-Rom® 900 bed as an efficient working tool helping you to ease your workload and increase the quality of care you provide to your patients.

Electric bed functions

Functions available to the patient and caregiver

The bed's electrical movements are activated using different control units according to your Hill-Rom bed model:

  • Controls integrated in the side rails.
  • Lateral pendant.
  • Caregiver pendant at foot end.
  • Controls on a flexible arm.

Functions available to the caregiver and the patient include the variable height control, the backrest control, the thigh support control and the egress position control.

Functions which are intended only for the caregiver include the Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg controls, the EasyChairTM  control, the Flat position control and the Shock position control. These functions depend on the bed model.

Enable key is available on the pendants and the control on the flexible arm (simultaneous activation required to initiate the caregiver functions).

  • Set-up the bed

Adjustable mattress retainers

The 2-position mattress retainers are used to centre mattresses of various widths on the sleep deck, thereby helping to reduce the risk of patient entrapment between mattress and side-rail.

Hip Indicator

The hip indicators help you to position the patient properly in bed, ensuring that the pivot point of the head section and the patient's hips (trochanter)   are perfectly aligned. Placing the patient on the bed with his hips in line   with the hip indicators helps improve patient comfort and the frequency with which you will need to re-position him.

Bed Extender (option)

The one motion bed extender allows you to accommodate taller patients.

  • To extend, squeeze the bed extender handle at the foot end of the bed and pull outwards to the desired length. Insert optional foam pad.
  • To close the extender, squeeze the bed extender handle and push inwards until closed. The built-in bed extender lengthens the bed by 20 cm.

Lock-out controls

Each specific bed movement can be locked/unlocked if required, depending on the condition or status of your patient. The selective locking out of functions   is intended mainly to prevent accidental use that may cause injury or worsen    a patient's conditions.

  • Protect the patient from falls

When fully raised, the siderails protect the patient from falls.        We also recommend that you refer to your hospital's side-rail policy.

  • Grip the side rail handle and pull upwards until a "click" is heard.
  • Ensure the siderail is safely locked into position by applying a push and pull action.

The side rails articulate with the bed to ensure maximum coverage even in sitting position. Raising and lowering the side rail consumes minimal space around the bed. The side rails will not interfere with adjacent equipment.

Lowest Height Indicator

In order to reduce the severity of patient falls, we recommendto lower bed to its lowest height when the patient is left unattended. A light on the control panel warns you if       the bed is not in the lowest position.

Night light (option)

When the light switch is ON, the night light illuminates the sides of the bed where the patient egresses helping to show potential trip hazards in a dark or poorly lit room. The light is green when bed is in the lowest and safest position, providing visual control even from outside of the patient's room, and orange when out of the lowest position. To turn on the night light, simply press the button on the lateral control panel. Pressing the button again turns it off.

Brake-off Indicator (option)

The brake-off indicator reminds you to engage the bed brakes, ensuring the bed is safely secured in place.

An alarm sounds continuously if the brakes are not applied whilst the bed is plugged into the power mains. It stops when the brakes are applied or when the bed is unplugged.

Additionally, the indicator reminds you to unplug the bed before transport.

  • Mobilise the patient in bed

Backrest adjustment

The angle of the backrest can be adjusted using the head "up" and "down" buttons on the control panel. The backrest slides backward to reduce compression of the patient's abdomen. The head of bed elevation can be seen on the indicator located laterally at each side of the bed.

Intelligent Autocontour

When raising (or lowering) the backrest, the knee section also rises (or lowers) after a 5-second delay, preventing the patient from sliding towards the foot end of the bed and helping reduce shear and friction. The 5-second delay can be reset by simply letting go temporarily of the backrest button, allowing you to control the level of thigh support provided.

The head of bed elevation can be seen on the indicator located on the head side rail. The head angle indicator highlights the 30°-45° head range to assist you in implementing nursing protocols.

Knee break adjustment

The angle of the knee section can be adjusted using the knee "up" and "down" buttons on the control panel.

EasyChairTM  (option)

The patient can be placed into a sitting position by pressing the EasyChairTM control. The EasyChairTM  position provides psychological benefits to the   patient, facilitates feeding and helps to improve the cardiovascular and respiratory functions, all important in speeding up the patient recovery process.

Flat position (available with EasyChairTM only)

Press the Flat position control to return the bed to the flat, horizontal and lowest position from any bed articulation. This function is particularly convenient when returning the patient from the EasyChairTM  position, saving time for the caregiver. The bed automatically stops moving when it reaches the lowered and flat position.

Electric Trendelenburg/ Reverse Trendelenburg (option)

The sleep surface can be tilted in two ways:

  • Trendelenburg (the head end is lowered).
  • Reverse Trendelenburg (foot end is lowered).

Press the Trendelenburg or reverse Trendelenburg control. To observe the angle, refer to the angle indicator located on the foot side rail. Patient repositioning and pressure distribution are simplified and effortless using the electric Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg functions. The optional stationary head section prevents damage to walls when Trendelenburg is engaged.

The accessories remain vertical.
