Surgical and procedure lights are used in hospital operating rooms, ambulatory surgery centres, emergency rooms and labour & delivery rooms. The primary function of surgical lights is to illuminate the site of operation or the operating room staff during a surgical procedure. In some cases, examination lights may also be used during minor surgical procedures.

Surgical & procedure lights have many types; this classification is based on the specific role during a medical procedure, by lamp type and mounting configuration. Two main types of lamp are:

  • Incandescent: Utilise an incandescent bulb filled with a halogen gas that produces light inside the lamp.
  • LED: Solid-state semiconductor device which emits light as the current through them. Compared to incandescent surgical and procedure lights, LEDs are small, durable and have a higher bulb-life rate.

The requirements for a surgical light vary, depending on factors, including the lighting system's type, brand, and model. A surgical light head’s brightness is measured in Lux. A light head usually has 400-700 mm dimensions and weighs around 45 Kg. Modern-day surgical lights can give 40,000 to 60,000 hours of service before their light fades.

Surgical & Operating Light Buying Guide

Find and buy Surgical and Procedure Lights from verified suppliers on MedicalSearch. Surgical and Procedure Lights are used to proved illumination during medical procedures and examinations.

Factors to consider when buying surgical and procedure lights:

  • LED versus halogen – LED is often the preferred choice, advantages including brighter light, lower colour temperature, energy efficiency and longer life span.
  • Configuration – Floor standing surgical and procedure lights can be moved easily from room to room. A wall-mounted configuration is better suited for examination lights than surgical lights. Ceiling-mount is common for surgical lights due to flexibility in vertical and horizontal movement.
  • Single versus multiple surgical light heads – Modern lights can provide sufficient output but multiple heads allow easy adjustments.
  • Light output – The ideal illuminance is between 40,000 and 160,000 lux for surgical lights and 1,000 lux for examination lights.
  • Colour temperature – The ideal is between 3,000 and 6,700 K.
  • Colour rendering – The ideal range of surgical lights is between 85 and 100 Ra.
  • Light field diameter – D50 should be at least 50% of D10.
  • Lifespan – LED surgical lights should last between 40,000 to 60,000 hours of use or 10-12 years.
  • Battery backup – In case of power supply interruption, surgical lights must be restored within five seconds with at least 40,000 lux.
