Pressure care mattresses or alternating air mattresses are designed to enhance patient care by improving overall comfort and reducing ongoing health complications such as bedsores and shearing. Pressure care mattresses promote proper circulation and reduce the risk of skin breakdown from occurring by immersing the body into the mattress and evenly distributing the weight of a patient throughout the bed. This disperses pressure away from problem areas such as bone protrusions that can put constant pressure on parts of the body and decrease blood flow in the tissue.

Pressure care mattresses are available in a number of different materials and are often used in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities by patients that are bedridden due to limited mobility or injury.
