Building blocks of good practice design
- The waiting room provides the client’s first impression of your practice, make sure it’s a good one. Put a lot of thought into creating a welcoming environment by using high quality materials, attractive colour schemes, comfortable seating, and plenty of amenities. This is where your and your Designers ideas can have the greatest impact.
- Reception and administration areas are the engine room of the clinic and need to have special attention at the Design phase in order to ensure the smooth running of the clinic. Many professionals have told us that “when our admin’ area runs well, we all run well”. This area is integral to the waiting room space.
- Clinicians of every kind spend a lot of their day in the consulting room. Ensure the area is comfortable and functional. Do not scrimp on the fit out or design of this room. Provide seating for your clients and use a wheeled stool or drafting chair to take the load off the feet or the treating medical personnel.
- Treatment rooms should be spacious, allow in as much natural light as possible and be ergonomically designed. Provide plenty of circulation space for efficient working and traffic flow. Don’t forget the access and storage space needed by ancilliary treatment equipment such as shared ECG and Defribrulator Trolleys.
- Maintain high quality invasive surgery standards in the surgery and sterilization rooms with easy-to-clean surfaces, minimum ledges for dust control, and plenty of room to move. All equipment should be mobile for ease of access to your client and also for cleaning.
Top 5 pitfalls
- Selecting poor quality materials or furnishings. This is false economy especially in frequent or hard use areas.
- Avoid narrow circulation and corridor spaces. Staff, clients and carers need to move around freely.
- Don't underestimate your storage requirements. Consider how much space you need for auxiliary equipment and access to commonly used items.
- Inadequate noise and odour controls. No one wants to hear a constant background noise of the waiting room, other consulting areas or traffic during consultations. Bad odours from poor ventilation are often perceived by clients to be indicative of poor standards of professionalism.
- Going for the immediate fix. Failure to plan for expansion can be costly. Consider not only the short-term needs of your practice but where you would like to be in 3 or 5 years’ time.
