Whilst microwave radiation leakage testing is not mandatory in all states or required under law (except WA) AWTT conducts microwave radiation leakage tests in the workplace to the manufacturing standard AS/NZS 3350 using specialised testing equipment that is correctly calibrated to meet AWTT’s testing Standards.
Domestic radiation testers do not meet the accuracy of AWTT microwave testers and are not recommended for accuracy.
Radiation leakage from a microwave oven can occur through the doors and seals and is invisible. These harmful radiation leakages could potentially cause harm to user’s health.
The Australian manufacturing standard (AS/NZ 3350)indicates the microwave leakage at any point 50mm or more from the external surface of the appliance shall not exceed 50W/m2 (5mW/cm2) when manufactured.
The Australian manufacturing standard relates to exposure to sufficiently high levels of microwaves will cause heating. The purpose of the Australian manufacturing standard is to avoid all adverse health effects by limiting exposure levels to levels below those at which heating occurs.
Even if used in a workplace the Australian manufacturing standard applies to microwave ovens designed for domestic applications.
Employers should ensure their workplaces are safe and as such AWTT are able to conduct the testing of microwave ovens for radiation leakage in the workplace annually as our minimum standard to assist our customers with their workplace safety.
AWTT particularly recommends testing if any signs of damage or wear are present.
