An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanner is a kind of medical imaging device that makes use of a magnetic field and radio frequency pulses to create detailed pictures of internal structures of body parts and organs, including the brain, heart , spinal cord, bones, joints, soft tissues such as cartilage, muscles and tendons, , etc. MRI pictures can be taken at many different angles so as to allow physicians to better evaluate in details any abnormalities initially discovered by other imaging methods such as X-rays and ultrasounds. MRI scanners can detect problems such as tumors, abnormal tissues, bone marrow diseases, herniation or degeneration of spinal discs, internal bleeding and injuries, heart defects, multiple sclerosis etc.

Magnetic resonance (MRI) may be used instead of computed tomography (CT) in situations where organs or soft tissue are being studied, because with MRI scanning bones do not obscure the images of organs and soft tissues, as does CT scanning.
A patient receiving an MRI scan lies on a table which slowly moves into a cylinder-shape magnet, where the scanning takes place. Radio frequency pulses are then sent through the body. The MRI scanner collects the radio waves signals coming back from the body, sends them to a computer which then processes the signals and converts them into pictures for examination.
