Dr Kevin Bourke, an Australian dentist, invented the MYO as an oral appliance to improve the quality of the gum tissue. It was introduced to the dental profession at the biannual Australian Dental Convention in 1974 in Hobart.
Since then it has variously been called the "Munchie Chewer", the Perio Myo Pedic and the Myomunchee. Subsequent research in Japan and USA found that using the MYO had numerous oral health benefits.
Dentistry is increasingly about prevention rather than cure and MYO appliances were designed to prevent many common dental problems. These simple and inexpensive dental products are a vital part of preventative dental care and hygiene.
