Formerly, dentists were required to practise using the name under which they were registered and by no other name. With changes to the regulations, dentists are now permitted to identify their practice in some way other than by using their individual name.
The purpose of practising under a distinct practice name is to make it easier for the public to identify with your particular dental surgery. The goal of your name is to define, but not limit, the scope of your patient population.
The first step in developing name recognition is creating a name that is easily recognisable and associated with your dental practice. If you want a new patient to contact you, you have to give them something to remember you by.
Your practice name must be clearly visible and strongly memorable. The name could be ‘catchy and creative’ or it could identify the specific geographic location of your practice. Either of these will make it easier for a new patient to recall the name and/or location of your practice.
Important considerations that distinguish a good practice name from a great practice name include:
- Making it easy to remember;
- Simple to pronounce;
- Informative: presents a clear understanding of the services provided;
- Recognisable: specifies the type of patient you wish to serve;
- Describes a geographical area, without being too limiting, or too broad; and
- Is positive!
