They say if you don’t know your history, you’re like a tree without roots. No foundation to build on, no way to grow.

Fortunately, knowing where we came from has helped us become the leader we are today.

Our history is one we’re incredibly proud of.

In 1997, laser physicists Dr. Jim Hobart and Dr. Dan Negus founded Sciton.

But let’s rewind to the 1960s when the story begins, and Jim establishes the laser company Coherent.

He designed its first CO2 laser, the UltraPulse—the gold standard in laser resurfacing for many years—by powering it with a 220-volt outlet from his laundry room! That innovative spirit is still a core value at Sciton today.

Fast forward to 1996, when Jim makes the difficult decision to retire from Coherent.

Regarded as one of the most successful laser companies in the world at that time, Coherent’s aesthetic division had grown immensely and was sold off. It had become a large, publicly traded corporation, forsaking quality for Wall Street returns.

But Jim didn’t believe in cutting corners. Notorious for stopping production when the quality wasn’t right—he ultimately resigned.

Luckily, retirement wasn’t for him.

In 1997, Jim brought 15 key individuals from Coherent, including the head of research and development, Dan Negus, to create Sciton.

Since its founding, Sciton’s policy has been “Do the Right Thing.”
