What is Urethral bulking?

Urethral Bulking involves the injection of a soft hydrogel, like Bulkamid, into 3 or 4 locations in the sub-mucosal tissue of the urethral wall using a small telescope. The volume of each injection is around 2mls which is similar to the size of a pea.

Bulkamid aims to restore the natural closing pressure of the urethra by adding volume to the urethral tissue, preventing urine from leaking out unintentionally during normal daily activities (e.g. when coughing, laughing, walking or exercising).

Urethral bulking using Bulkamid® has become an important option for patients asking for minimally invasive treatments of SUI. The injection procedure is normally performed under local anaesthesia and involves three small deposits of Bulkamid® Hydrogel Urethral Bulking Agent being injected into the wall of the urethra to improve the closing mechanism helping to prevent leakage from the bladder.
